Things about cancer, both bad and good

This month has really sucked in terms of cancer.  The father of my childhood best friend (and next door neighbor of my parents for the past 33 years) died of complications from esophageal cancer earlier this month, and just yesterday my dad’s own childhood friend died of pancreatic cancer.  This is coming off of having 2 other people I know dying of cancer earlier this year as well.

I suppose the people of my parent’s generation are at an age where cancers are, sadly, somewhat common.

But basically? Cancer sucks.

And I’m really sick of that being my only answer to things.

So I figure it’s time for some good cancer news.

Earlier this year I posted a story about a former coworker who is receiving the first every trial for a new ovarian cancer vaccine which uses her own tissue and immune system to fight the disease.

Basically it’s pretty bad ass.  And I could prattle on about how fantastic my coworker is, and how much I admire her, but that’s just really icing on the cake to this portion of the Feel Good Story Hour

The real good news part comes in by this: The latest scans show that the tumors present have shrunk – BY HALF.

If that’s not amazing news, I don’t know what it.

Science is awesome.

Things about Public Health School

Yesterday I decided to abuse people’s basic human rights, and in a completely separate decision, to kill off children under 5 years old.

And I’m not sure I wouldn’t do it again.

Public health school is weird.*

(In context:  both were decisions regarding limited-resource countries and ways to combat HIV. But still. )

* But awesome.

Things about health care

I can’t really say it better than this. Plus, I can’t draw better than this either, so why try:

Things that need to happen soon

After a meeting today with out insurance agent, we discovered our company’s health care costs are about to increase… by 40%.

I can say, as a representative of a small business, my company is desperate for a public option.  C’mon, Congress, you know you want to give us legislation that’s not a piece of shit. Just stop the whole ‘heads up your asses’ thing and do it.

Additionally, according to a Newsweek article online now:

In the study of 173 countries, we stood with Liberia, Swaziland, and Papua New Guinea as the only countries providing no paid maternity leave. Of the 169 countries that guarantee paid maternity leave, 98 of them provide 14 or more weeks. Among wealthy countries—except ours—parents are entitled to as much as 47 weeks of paid family leave.

Sad face emoticons don’t do my disappointment justice when I realize that one of the most advanced, powerful, and wealthy countries in the world is on par with Swaziland for anything. No disrespect meant to Swaziland, but… it’s a country with nearly 70% of it’s population below the poverty line.

Come. the. fuck. on. America.

Things that are good news

MRI/MRA results came back – three nail-biting days late – normal. Phew. No brain aneurysm for me! Woohoo!

Now I just have to convince myself that my intense attacks of pain are migraine.

(Pssst, they’re not)

Oh, Cute Dr. Neurologist man.  I disagree with you. But you’re still my favorite doctor, and the only one who I’ve felt has actually listened to me, so… thanks.  Ex Oh Ex Oh.

Things I should not do #2

Doctor’s office hasn’t received my MRI results yet. Told me to call back tomorrow.

Naturally, what did I do, but spent the entire rest of the day trying to distract myself from my disappointment. Much to my surprise, I actually succeeded a moderate amount.

Until tonight. When I started getting another round of clustery stabbing awfulness cramping in my head…

And I was already on the world wide internets…

And I gave in.

I googled my symptoms.

Ugh, when did I turn into such a hypochondriac?

Head please stop hurting. I will do anything. Just… just… stop being so scary and undiagnosable. Okay?

Things I am willing to beg for

After a year and a half, I’m willing to beg.  Please make my head stop hurting.  It’s gotten so much worse in the last few months. Please make it stop. I’m so sick of this.

MRI results in 24 hours. I don’t know if I’m hoping for it to show nothing (meaning “asymptomatic migraines” since I fit the right gender and age bill (stupid getting older)), or something worse so I know I’m not totally insane being freaked out by the intense ickyness that’s been attacking my head increasingly over the last year and a half.

Plus, in the past week I have learned though that migraine meds make me nauseous, and don’t really help with the squeezing pain.

So there’s that.
